The Spanish Ministry of Transport is propelling Valladolid into the spotlight as Spain's upcoming rail freight hub with a significant investment of EUR 15 million. This funding aims to develop the track and electrify the Eastern Freight Variant in Valladolid.

Entrusted to a consortium comprising Contratas y Ventas and FCC Industrial e Infraestructuras Energéticas, the project will encompass the establishment of a variant track south of Valladolid near Pinar de Antequera. This strategic track will bridge the Iberian gauge Madrid-Hendaya line and the Valladolid Campo Grande station, earmarked exclusively for freight traffic. Integral to the plan is the electrification of tracks tailored for 750-metre trains and container slab access at the expansive Valladolid Railway Complex.

Spanning 17.5 kilometers, the Eastern Variant of Valladolid is a crucial infrastructural enhancement, incorporating notable features such as a 1.1-kilometre viaduct and a 2.1-kilometre tunnel. Positioned on the TEN-T Atlantic Corridor, this initiative ensures connectivity to the primary standard gauge line, further reinforcing Valladolid's growing significance in the rail landscape.

The Valladolid Railway Complex is set to be a rail freight terminal sprawling across 230,000 square meters. Its inception is a transformative move centralizing freight operations in one pivotal hub.
