ÖBB Personenverkehr Kärnten, in addition to the basic services of S-Bahn Kärnten, has in recent years pursued a clear strategy of sustainable mobility by developing the ÖBB Freizeit-/Radsprinter (Leisure/Bike Sprinter). MICOTRA-, Tauern-, Karawanken- and Petzensprinter will be extended from 04.06.2022 with the Gailtalsprinter, which also offers a connection to a bicycle bus from Hermagor to Kötschach-Mauthen. In June, the purely Inner Carinthian leisure/sprinter trains will run on Saturdays and Sundays, and from July until the start of school in September, they will run daily.

This new rail service between Villach and Hermagor, with additional capacity for carrying up to 100 bicycles, is also intended to serve as a stimulus here and further strengthen bicycle tourism in Carinthia. All locals and vacation guests are thus offered a further leisure offer, which makes it possible to experience the diversity of our tourist state by train and bike.
"The new Gailtal Sprinter is a great asset for Carinthia's cycle tourism. Guest surveys show that cycling, hiking and swimming are among the most popular vacation activities of Carinthia's guests. I am very pleased that we can further increase the attractiveness of our active nature offer in combination with sustainable mobility with this extension of the ÖBB Sprinter network," says Kärnten Werbung chief, Christian Kresse.
Successful premiere trip
To set this further milestone of ecological mobility in Carinthia in the scene, a premiere journey of the extra class and at the same time successful presentation of the newest rail product in Carinthia, the Freizeit-/Radsprinter Gailtal took place on 02.06.2022.
Reinhard Wallner, regional manager of ÖBB Personenverkehr Kärnten, initiator and visionary in terms of sustainable mobility, is convinced: "Families and active people will particularly appreciate this offer of ÖBB in Carinthia because the new Freizeit-/Radsprinter between Villach and Hermagor has enough space for bicycles, is uncomplicated to use and in combination with the tariff offers of the Einfach Raus ticket of ÖBB or the Freizeit- or Aktiv-Ticket of the Kärntner Linien an absolute hit. As a result, this new offer is ideally suited for all leisure activities, whether by bike along the R3 cycle path or for a hike along the Gailtal route, for carefree leisure enjoyment."

ÖBB Freizeit-/Radsprinter as a strong mobility product for cyclists and hikers
The combination of active mobility and ecological rail mobility is one of the most essential contributions to counteract the climate crisis and the main cause of individual motorized mobility. In addition to many infrastructural investments, in recent years, the ÖBB in Carinthia had also massively expanded the offer of the S-Bahn Carinthia and, with an almost continuous hourly frequency on all lines, created the basis for the ideal combination with bicycle mobility. Wallner informs: "35 cycle paths out of 41 run parallel to the S-Bahn network and thus enable the problem-free combination of Rail & Bike.
Mobility and Tourism Provincial Councillor Sebastian Schuschnig also emphasizes: "With the Gailtalsprinter, we are offering guests and Carinthians an attractive offer that also stimulates tourism in the off-seasons. In this way, we are further expanding the offer. Because not only travelling without a car has become a trend in recent years, but also cycling is becoming increasingly important during a vacation. With the leisure and cycling sprinters, we are providing an additional offer for the entire leisure and tourism industry and making a significant contribution to strengthening cycling tourism in Carinthia.
Carinthia, the well-known bicycle destination at home and abroad
The bicycle has become an indispensable part of everyday life and leisure activities and thus occupies a thoroughly relevant place in coping with the climate crisis. In addition, the leisure and tourism industry always needs new interesting offers to make Carinthia even more attractive as a cycling destination.
However, the S-Bahn Carinthia with its capacities has already been offering a flexible basic offer, the combination of cycling and railroad experience around the most beautiful cycling routes for years. Routes such as the Drau Cycle Path, which has been certified with 5 stars according to the ADFC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrradclub), the Wörthersee Cycle Path, Mölltal Cycle Path, Gailtal Cycle Path, Alpe-Adria-Ciclovia Cycle Path or the Save Cycle Path guarantee intensive experiences amid a unique mountain and lake landscape and all of them can be reached particularly comfortably by train. The ÖBB Freizeit-/Radsprinter are now also significant for this:
Comfortably by train from Villach to the National Park region Hohe Tauern and to the Mölltal and Drau cycle paths R3 and R1
On the S-Bahn line 4 to Hermagor to the Gailtal cycle path R3
For the perfect tour start at Jesenice (SLO) and back to Carinthia via the Alpe Adria Ciclovia and Sava cycle paths
Bleiburg - brisk to culture on the R1 art trail or Europe's most famous bike flow trail on the Petzen. There is also a bicycle bus at the train station Bleiburg to the Petzentalstation.

AKTIV - ticket for leisure & bike sprinter from 16 Euro
In addition, a ticket offer of the Carinthian lines is used for the "Freizeit & Radsprinter". This ticket offer was designed on the basis of the leisure ticket and is only valid in combination for travellers with a bicycle. The fare for adults of 16 euros and children around 11 euros for bicycle transport is integrated into the ticket price in the form of a combination ticket and can also be used daily on all local trains of the S-Bahn Carinthia. "This will provide customers with even greater flexibility in the use of the feeder and onward lines in local rail transport," Wallner is convinced.
