Adif AV is making considerable advances in the refurbishment of the Madrid-Seville High-Speed Line (HSL) in Castilla-La Mancha. This phase of works involves the renovation of eight key turnouts at Ciudad Real station, elements that facilitate track switching for trains.

The upgrades, part of a larger €120 million investment, will see 63 of the 108 high-speed devices along the line refurbished, including those at various stations such as Train Overtaking and Parking Stations (PAET) and Intermediate Interchange Stations (PIB). The incorporation of the latest technology will enhance the turnouts' suitability for high-speed trains, allowing them to reach top speeds of 350 km/h.

The overhaul project has already seen considerable success, with half of the turnouts intended for the first phase already renovated at various locations, including Madrid, Ciudad Real, Cordoba, and Seville. Additionally, these works complement other significant infrastructural upgrades in Castilla-La Mancha, most notably a €65.8 million investment in the Yeles-Guadalmez section for updating platforms, drainage systems, and other structural elements.

The renovation process, carried out at Adif's Villarrubia de Santiago maintenance base, involves pre-assembling the turnouts, with the exclusion of motors and other mechanical components. These turnouts, once completed, are transported by train to their respective installation sites. To minimise disruption to railway traffic, the work at Ciudad Real station will be performed at night, requiring considerable technical and human resources. This refurbishment of the Madrid-Seville HSL, Spain's first high-speed line operational since 1992, aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9, prioritising reliable, sustainable, resilient, and quality infrastructure, and represents a total investment of €680 million, with €668 million already allocated. The aim is to uphold the line's reliability and safety standards established over the past three decades.
