In response to Russia’s war against Ukraine, LTG Cargo of the Lithuanian Railways (LTG) group suspended the rental of platform railcars. From March 7th, the company’s flatbed railcars may not be transported directly to Russia or Belarus or in transit through other countries.
The aim of the decision is to prevent the use of the platform railcars for military purposes by Russia or Belarus. According to unofficial sources, platform railcars entering Russia or Belarus could be nationalized and used to transport military equipment.
“Currently, taking into account the official and unofficial information received, we are conducting comprehensive actions. We will first assess the possible links between customers and those subjects to EU sanctions. If such links are established, we will refuse to transport their cargo. So, we stopped the load of the company “Metalloinvest” at the end of last week. Secondly, we are trying to prevent the company’s platform cars from being used for military purposes,” says Eglė Šimė, CEO of LTG Cargo.
LTG Cargo has called on Russian Railways and Belarusian Railways to return the wagons owned by the Lithuanian company as a matter of urgency. Urgent returns have also been introduced for wagons passing through these countries in transit.
According to the latest figures, there are currently 325 Lithuanian platform railcars in Russia and Belarus.
