The Vilnius-Klaipėda railway, Lithuania's most trafficked rail artery, has reached a significant milestone in its modernization journey, achieving 50% completion in its electrification project.

Transport and Communications Minister Marius Skuodis recently assessed the ongoing works, emphasizing the railway's vital role, which last year catered to nearly 40% of the country's rail freight and 16% of passenger transit. With this year's completion of 164 km of the 363 km project, it stands as a testament to Lithuania's commitment to greener transport solutions.

The electrification venture, which includes the construction of six traction substations and eight autotransformers, is backed by an investment of EUR 411.26 million. Approximately EUR 200 million of this fund is supported by the EU Cohesion Fund. The project, once fully realized, promises not only to revolutionize the nation's transport infrastructure but also to significantly curtail CO2 emissions by over 150,000 tonnes annually.

In addition to the infrastructural developments, Lithuania's broader electrification vision is taking shape. Egidijus Lazauskas, CEO of LTG, emphasized the Group's commitment to fostering a sustainable transport future for Lithuania. The Group is venturing into modern electric and battery-electric train acquisitions, promising a new era of travel experience and a reduced environmental footprint.
