Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) is gearing up to revolutionize rail transport in Georgia by initiating a pilot program to employ autonomous battery-powered wagons. Developed by Parallel Systems, this cutting-edge technology holds the potential to significantly enhance cargo transport, specifically to and from the Port of Savannah.

Not only does this innovation have the potential to rejuvenate rural railways and breathe new life into inland ports, but it also offers a promising alternative to road transport, thereby potentially reducing the number of lorries on the roads.

To kick off the project, G&W has reached out to the Federal Railroad Administration, seeking permission to launch the trial through its Georgia Central Railway and Heart of Georgia Railroad subsidiaries. If greenlit, the multi-tiered pilot is set to commence next year. Emphasizing safety, the company has stated that the entire trial will adhere to meticulously designed protocols, ensuring the technology's field demonstration is executed in a secure, regulated environment.
