Abraham Lincoln's funeral train is said to still appear in some places across the U.S. as a ghostly version of the original train. Witnesses describe strange phenomena such as time stopping, cold gusts of wind, and the appearance of skeletons guarding the president's coffin.

If you find yourself in the United States at the end of April and you’re a fan of ghost stories, get ready for a hunt for Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train. The former American president served from 1861 to 1865. Lincoln’s story is known around the world. On April 14, 1865, the 16th president of the U.S. was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre in Washington. According to Ford's Theatre, he was shot in the back of the head and died the following day, on April 15, 1865. Lincoln’s remains were transported from the nation’s capital to Springfield, Illinois. A special train was dispatched for this purpose—and according to various accounts, that very train can still be seen to this day.

The Funeral Train and Its Solemn Mission

The funeral train consisted of a locomotive and nine cars. Ghosts of Albany reports that a photograph of Lincoln and a mourning wreath were displayed at the front of the locomotive, which was also draped in black crepe fabric as a symbol of national mourning. Each car had its own purpose. One of them housed the funeral carriage and horses, another offered accommodation for the president’s family, and one was specifically converted into a funeral transport car. One of the cars held Lincoln’s coffin, which was placed next to the remains of his deceased son, who had died of typhoid fever in 1862. Interestingly, the train stopped in every major city along the route, where the coffin was removed and taken in a funeral procession through the streets. For this reason, an embalmer was present on board the train to regularly preserve the president’s body.

Legends of the Spectral Train

Many mysterious and eerie legends are associated with Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train. Railroad workers claim that on the anniversary of its original journey, the ghostly image of the train can be seen passing through the same areas. According to wgpfoundation.org, witnesses describe it as a misty silhouette, yet with surprisingly accurate details that match the original train. Those who have seen it report feeling a sudden gust of cold wind, much colder than a normal night breeze. Some even claim to have heard the faint tolling of a bell or the long whistle of a train. This spectral train is said to appear only in places where the original one once passed, and even seasoned railway workers admit to being unnerved by its presence.

According to many testimonies, the ghost train is not just a tale among railroad workers—there are reportedly many more witnesses. Some describe the surrounding area becoming shrouded in fog and darkness as the train approaches, as if the very sky is mourning. The moon, which may have been shining brightly, becomes hidden behind thick clouds, and the landscape is swallowed by an eerie gloom. But once the train disappears, the clouds part, the sky clears, and moonlight returns to the scene. Some witnesses even claim to have looked inside the haunted train. Through fogged-up windows, they say they saw Lincoln’s coffin draped with the American flag. Surrounding it stood ghostly skeletal figures dressed in military uniforms, keeping solemn vigil over the fallen president.

Time Stands Still

According to available reports, the ghost train most frequently appears in the area around New York and Hyde Park. These locations are most often mentioned in both historical and modern sightings. People who have seen the train don’t just report its ghostly appearance, but also strange phenomena that seem to accompany it. One of the most mysterious is the halting of time. Several witnesses claim that as the train passed, clocks at train stations, in homes, and even on wristwatches or pocket watches suddenly stopped. In some cases, time was reportedly delayed by exactly six minutes, as if the passage of the ghost train somehow disrupted the very flow of time itself.
