Sweden's national railroad operator SJ signed an agreement with Alstom to supply 25 Zefiro Express high-speed electric trains capable of speeds up to 250 km/h. The contract is valued at EUR 650 million, with the delivery of the first train expected in 2026.

"Alstom is immensely proud to be delivering these new high-speed trains to SJ. This is a historic agreement that will change the way passengers travel across the country. With concerns about climate change, high-speed rail is the primary alternative to air travel. It's comfortable, convenient, and now very fast. This is a trend we see everywhere, and Alstom is the leader in this domain with experience from several high-speed train projects around the world. We thank SJ for their continued confidence in us," says Rob Whyte, Managing Director of Alstom Nordics.

The Zefiro Express trains have been designed for maximum passenger comfort, with 363 seats and premium lighting. The cars are equipped with level floors without ramps, making it easy to enter, exit, and move around the train. Remarkably, these trains were designed specifically for Sweden's harsh weather conditions and are suitable for operation at temperatures down to -40 degrees. Among other things, the width of the cars, electrical systems, and signaling systems allow the trains to run in Denmark and Norway.

The trains of this series are part of Alstom's Avelia platform of high and very high-speed trains, developing maximum operating speeds of 200 km/h to 350 km/h and being the most significant supplier to the Swedish rail market.
