This week started with alarming news as Croatia topped the rail headlines due to a serious accident on Monday morning. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the collision between a freight train and a track maintenance vehicle led to the destruction of railroad tracks and considerable damage to railcars.
According to HRT, on Monday at 8:49 a.m., a freight train operated by Rail Cargo Carrier - Croatia (RCC) collided with a vehicle belonging to HŽ Infrastruktura (Croatian Railways Infrastructure), derailing between the Meja and Škrljevo stations. Stopping at the Meja station is mandatory, yet, for reasons currently unknown, the 19-car RCC train, which was transporting grain, failed to stop, resulting in the collision with the HŽ Infrastruktura vehicle.
Darko Barišić, a board member of HŽ Infrastruktura, confirmed that no injuries were reported. An investigation is underway to determine if there were any failures related to the safety of the railway system that could have led to the accident. This will involve collecting and analyzing all relevant data. Meanwhile, rail traffic to and from Rijeka has been suspended, with passenger transportation being provided by buses.
