CargoBeamer has achieved a significant milestone in its efforts to transport semi-trailers by rail. The company has successfully operated its first train with trailers from Marseille to Calais. This achievement marks a major step forward for CargoBeamer as it seeks to offer an environmentally-friendly alternative to the road transportation for goods across Europe.

The first-ever railway line for unaccompanied trailer transport on rail, consisting of 28 units, has successfully transported semi-trailers from the Port of Marseille Fos to the CargoBeamer-Terminal in Calais.

Traction was provided by DB Cargo France and the train featured CargoBeamer-railcars and twin pocket wagons. The service offered sustainable rail transport instead of road transport and reduced each loading unit's CO2 footprint by about 90% compared to road transport.

During the journey, the entire train saved roughly 30.8 tons of carbon emissions compared to road transport. The test train was handled inside the Marseille Manutention Ro-Ro Terminal, owned by CMA Terminals. The Port of Marseille Fos is one of the largest in Europe and has 90 direct shipping lines connecting Southern France to Northern Africa, the Mediterranean, and the rest of the world.

The successful completion of the test train has paved the way for exploring the possibility of opening another CargoBeamer lane in the area due to the rapid growth of both the ports' volumes and intermodal business in France. The President of the Port of Marseille Fos expressed his full support for the project, emphasizing that this type of new project helps the port position itself as one of the main RoRo hubs in the Mediterranean Sea area and contributes to reducing CO2 emissions, which is a strong axis of the port strategy.
