Together with the Minister of Economics, Transport, Labour, Technology and Tourism for Schleswig-Holstein, Claus Ruhe Madsen, the Managing Director of Nahverkehrsverbund Schleswig- Holstein (NAH.SH), Dr Arne Beck and other guests from politics and business, Stadler inserted a time capsule into the foundation of its newest service location in Germany during the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone on 15 May 2023.
For the maintenance of the new battery-electric regional multiple-unit fleet of the type FLIRT Akku, the Swiss train manufacturer and service provider Stadler is building a state-of-the-art maintenance facility in the heart of Schleswig-Holstein.

Almost four years ago, Stadler won the NAH.SH tender for the delivery of 55 FLIRT Akku trains, including the vehicle fleet maintenance for 30 years. From late summer 2023, these trains will be used to operate around 10 million battery-electric train kilometres on eleven railway lines, accounting for about 40 per cent of rail traffic in Schleswig-Holstein. Stadler is investing approximately 30 million euros in the Rendsburg site for the maintenance of these vehicles and will create optimal maintenance, parking and charging infrastructure for the maintenance of innovative battery-electric rail vehicles by spring 2024, which is unique in Germany to date. In the coming months, up to 30 new jobs will be created in a modern working environment at the plant.
Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen: "With the battery trains, we will succeed in more than doubling the number of diesel-free lines in Schleswig-Holstein in one fell swoop. The maintenance workshop in Rendsburg is a crucial building block for the climate-neutral battery training future in our state. For the city of Rendsburg, the workshop also means that skilled workers can be retained in a future-proof industry. It is a great development both for our climate protection goals and for Schleswig-Holstein as a business location."
Dr. Arne Beck, NAH.SH Managing Director: "The battery trains are not only a real benefit for climate protection, but also for our passengers, who will be able to travel even more comfortably across the country in super modern, much quieter, air-conditioned and barrier-free vehicles this year. A significant contribution to stable operation with the new battery trains is short distances to good maintenance - and that in the hands of the manufacturer, i.e. by absolute experts."

The new maintenance plant is being built on the 77,000m2 site, which includes a vehicle hall with two tracks with pits and roof work stands, workshops, an office and social wing as well as an external cleaning facility. The plant has also been specially designed for the handling, charging and storage of the batteries that will power the FLIRT battery trains.
In addition to the so-called transfer tracks, eight parking spaces are planned in the outdoor area for cleaning the inside of the vehicles with catenary systems for recharging the batteries. Batteries that have been removed must also be carefully stored: For this purpose, specially designed diagnostic containers for monitoring the train batteries are planned in the new maintenance facility. In future, these will be used to extensively monitor and evaluate the data of the removed energy storage systems to decide whether additional maintenance is required.
